8 Song of the Summer Contenders, According to the Radio Programmers Who Choose Them

In theory, we each define our own songs of the summer. In practice, for better but sometimes for worse, certain songs will be as constant between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the smell of ozone and sunscreen at the beach, pumping themselves into our subconscious in restaurants, at the gym, and over the radios of passing cars. We sure as hell don't have to like them, but we can't always escape them. When we inevitably hear these same songs again in a few years, we just might have flashbacks to what we were doing in the summer of 2016; no pressure to have a great summer or anything!

Going by the Billboard charts, last year's song of the summer was OMI's "Cheerleader." In my own heart, it was probably Jamie xx's "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)," featuring Young Thug and Popcaan. Those two songs tell you what you probably already know about summer hits: They tend to be upbeat, playful, and hugely catchy. Plus, a bit of hip-hop, reggae, or both certainly doesn't hurt.  These songs of the summer don't emerge out of nowhere, however. Though the role of streaming playlists in influencing pop music only seems to grow, radio programmers still play a huge role in helping catalyze the weird alchemy that will create our future summer-music flashbacks. I spoke with a handful of them to hear what they think are the best bets for 2016's song of the summer.

As it turns out, if you picked Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling!" to make the most people dance, dance, dance all summer long, you're right there with the professionals. It's a safe choice: Timberlake is a superstar, the song is courtesy of platinum-bedecked hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback, and it has promotional backing from a movie, Trolls, that's poised to keep ramping up its marketing until a November release. But unlike the generic "room" mentioned in the song's lyrics, Timberlake doesn't necessarily have this on lock the way he rocks it. "Like [Daft Punk's] 'Get Lucky,' which was pleasant throwback disco of this sort, this song almost wants to be upstaged," Sean Ross, VP of music and programming for Edison Research and author of the Ross on Radio newsletter, tells me. "But time is running out."

One striking aspect of radio programmers' summer-song bets for 2016 was what they didn't pick. For instance, Pandora's partly data-based Songs of Summer 2016 playlist begins with Desiigner's "Panda," no one I spoke to went to bat for it. Drake's "One Dance," too, was more of an afterthought; and for as much as Beyoncé's's Lemonade succeeds as an audio and visual album, radio planners evidently aren't harboring plans to bombard us with standouts like "Hold Up" or "Sorry" as much we might want. Thinking back on songs like "Cheerleader" or Major Lazer's "Lean On" led me to wonder about some dark horse that's similarly catchy, lightweight, and ubiquitous, like the Chainsmokers' Daya-featuring "Don't Let Me Down" (also on the Pandora list), but again I found no takers.

Then there's the matter of timing. The vast majority of Billboard song-of-the-summer chart-toppers have historically arrived by April or earlier. Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling!"—released on May 8—would thus be an exception, but he's seemingly got that sunshine in his pocket. Nevertheless, let's look at the whole spread of Song of the Summer contenders, and hear from their proponents in programming.

And if you haven't seen Pitchfork staffers' own songs of the summer, have a look over there for a bit more musical variety.

Justin Timberlake — "Can't Stop the Feeling!"

A cheery, relentlessly unobjectionable postmodern-disco toe-tapper, Timberlake's movie song looks like the one to beat—er, stop. Chris Weingarten over at Rolling Stone nailed it when he described "Can't Stop the Feeling!" as "basically Pharrell's 'Happy' for Trolls instead of Minions," but that's not exactly a tough sell for a mass audience. When Timberlake previewed "Can't Stop the Feeling!" in the offices of the broadcaster formerly known as Clear Channel, recalls Sharon Dastur, senior VP of programming at iHeartRadio, "We immediately said those words, 'This is is the song of the summer." "It's different from what was out there," she adds. "It kind of has that flashback, throwback feel, but it's very current and it makes you feel great."

Dastur names a few other potential picks, but a couple of other programmers see nothing that compares with the Timberlake song. "It's such a big record," Michael Martin, SVP of programming and music initiatives at CBS Radio as well as program director of San Francisco's KLLC and KMVQ, tells me. "It casts such a wide net." Kid Kelly, head of pop music programming at SiriusXM, agrees. "I can visualize the current Timberlake song playing on a variety of formats, including urban and R&B," he says. "I don't know that we will ever hear a Drake song hit the [adult contemporary] format."

Drake — "Controlla"

If Timberlake doesn't end up dominating all summer long, two likely beneficiaries are Drake and Rihanna. "It's the Drake and Rihanna summer," Pio Ferro, the program director at New York rap station Hot 97, tells me. Of the top five songs on Hot 97 right now, two are by Drake, and two are by Rihanna; one of those is Rihanna featuring Drake ("Work"), and the other is Drake featuring Rihanna ("Too Good").

Ferro guesses that "Work," like Desiigner's "Panda," won't stay massive all summer. He goes out on a limb to pick "Controlla," VIEWS' mid-tempo R&B highlight with a dancehall vibe. "I would say 'Controlla' from Drake is going to be the song we're really sick of by the time summer is over," Ferro says. "It has that summer feel. It's just a great song."

Then again: "A great summer song is only appreciated after the summer is over," Ferro adds. "It's that song, the one you hear, you kind of reminisce and you go daaaaamn." As a more personal favorite, he cites dancehall singer Charly Black's "Gyal You a Party Animal." On the Drake front, it's impossible to overlook current No. 1 "One Dance," which CBS's Martin calls "a beast" of a record, though not one he expects to surpass the Timberlake song's broad ubiquity.

Calvin Harris and Rihanna — "This Is What You Came For"

Rihanna's previous collaboration with Calvin Harris, 2011's "We Found Love," spent more weeks at the top of the Hot 100 chart than any other song that year. It also outstayed Rihanna's Jay Z-featuring "Umbrella," which ended up as 2007's highest-charting summer song. But "We Found Love" premiered in September, ahead of Rihanna's Talk That Talk LP that November. The timing wasn't right for it to be a song of the summer.

In January, Rihanna released the compelling ANTI, which several months later already feels somehow underrated for a major pop star. Hot 97's Ferro justifiably lauds ANTI's "Needed Me" along with the Drake-featuring "Work," but perhaps given the album's ambition—much as I'd love to hear Rihanna's "Higher" rasp on Top 40 radio, I'm afraid it ain't gonna happen—it makes sense that RiRi's most hotly tipped single of 2016 is another huddle with Harris.

"I love Rihanna's ANTI—I think it's phenomenal," iHeartRadio's Dastur tells me, but "I love hearing her vocal quality on the Calvin song, it's back to her purer singing." "Calvin is going to be a really big record as well," CBS's Martin adds. In 2016, if the song of the summer is what Rihanna came for, her sleek dance-pop track with Harris may be how she gets it.

Ariana Grande — "Into You"

The vocal powerhouse's new album Dangerous Woman is loaded with songs that might, on paper, vie for song-of-the-summer honors. Her swaying, cinematic title track is probably too downtempo to qualify. But "Side to Side" is both reggae-tinged and features a guest in Nicki Minaj, who's no stranger to great summer songs (2013's "Starships" and 2011's "Super Bass" both ended their respective summers in the seasonal top 10). Elsewhere, the woozy "Everyday" borrows a trap infusion from Future, akin to Katy Perry's Juicy J-featuring "Dark Horse."

But it's "Into You," with its four-on-the-floor pulse and skeletal finger-snap production, that's Dangerous Woman's most likely song to be everywhere this summer. That's thanks in small part to a writing and production team that includes not only the aforementioned Max Martin, but also  Alexander Kronlund; together, they worked on Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" and vintage Robyn, while Kronlund also co-wrote Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend." "You just see how people instantly react to a song," iHeartRadio's Dastur tells me. "This is the one. There are some really great tracks on [Dangerous Woman] that are going to have a lot of legs for the year to come. But 'Into You' is just so, so catchy and hooky."

DNCE — "Toothbrush"

Joe Jonas's post-Jonas Brothers pop-rock band had its "Cake by the Ocean" last year, with a Top 10. Now DNCE are back to promote oral hygiene. Not really: Follow-up single "Toothbrush" is really more of an extended dance-pop riff a line from Jonas influence John Mayer's 2001 album cut "City Love" ("She keeps a toothbrush at my place..."), though admittedly without the wit seen in the rest of the original couplet ("...as if I had the extra space"). If the lyrical resource is Mayer, the sound is deeply rooted in the falsetto lite-funk of Maroon 5. Still, it's sure to be blasting from plenty of radios this summer, argues iHeartRadio's Dastur. (And alternative option if this isn't your thing: Listen to Maxwell's "Lake by the Ocean" and trust any romantic partners can keep track of their own dental floss.)

Meghan Trainor — "Me Too"

The "All About That Bass" singer's previous single, "NO," took on pick-up creeps via turn-of-the-century pop-R&B a la Destiny's Child and Britney Spears. Next up is the self-affirming "Me Too," with Karmin-style rapping set to electro-pop, plus an "Uptown Funk"-style chorus. (Both are produced by Ricky Reed, who remarkably first came to prominence with Das Racist's breakout remix in 2009.) "The Meghan Trainor song obviously is a big hit," iHeart's Dastur tells me. "It gives her a little more attitude, and a little more swag, and even just looking on Twitter, people mouthing the words to this song just because it's so fun. I definitely think 'Me Too' is going to be one of the bigger songs."

Fitz and the Tantrums — "HandClap"

L.A. pop-rockers Fitz and the Tantrums' forthcoming self-titled seems timed to summer listening (it's out next week), with single "HandClap" fitting right into a sunny mold. The verses are strikingly similar to a more caffeinated version of Lykke Li's 2008 song "I'm Good I'm Gone," on which Lykke Li even sings, "I know your hands will clap," right before subtler handclaps in a damn near identical rhythmic pattern; likewise, "I can make your hands clap," Fitz & co. repeat on "HandClap." But here it all opens up into a swelling, post-Bono chorus that includes the phrase "say a prayer to James Brown."

In the rock or alternative-rock radio realm, "HandClap" seems poised to be inescapable this season. "If you're stuck in traffic or even on a road trip you can try to count the actual handclaps in the song," says Jeff Regan, senior director of music programming/discovery initiatives at SiriusXM and host of the Alt Nation channel. It "really is one of those tracks that qualifies as a song of the summer," agrees Troy Hanson, VP of rock programming for Cumulus Media and also program director of Chicago's 101 WKQX. "It's bright, it's uptempo, and it's drop-the-top and have fun."

M83 — "Go!"

M83's "Go!" feels like a culmination of something. After exploring an electronic variant of shoegaze on early M83 albums, Anthony Gonzalez embraced synth-pop romance worthy of launching a thousand John Hughes-soundtrack comparisons on 2008's Saturdays=Youth. By 2011's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, M83 took dreamy synth-pop widescreen; Gonzalez did the same thing in a more literal sense, with 2013's Oblivion soundtrack. But on this year's Junk, M83 trawls ever-deeper through pop's trove of discarded culture, and "Go!" goes about as far as imaginable: Sax, OK, we're used to that, but a blissfully cheeseball guitar solo from the actual Steve Vai? French guest vocalist Mai Lan, though, is the song's secret weapon.

Despite everything, somehow it's not hard to imagine that guitar-encircled countdown-to-launch of a pre-chorus—and then the actual, bouncy chorus itself—pervading the airwaves in certain corners over the balmy months. "Go!" will never top the Hot 100 because it will never breach Top 40 radio, but there are other ways to reach listeners; Gonzalez is no stranger to syncs in commercials and TV/film.

"Everything is lining up for this song," SiriusXM Alt Nation's Regan says. "It makes me feel like jumping in a swimming pool. Windows down. But if you look at it on paper it's like, 'This is crazy.'" Rob Cross, VP of music programming at SiriusXM and program director of its indie-oriented SiriusXMU, concurs: "M83''s 'Go!' is great, just because vibe-wise it fits the summer." A French producer's spacey, synth-based song, with a Steve Vai solo, as 2016's Song of the Summer? This year, stranger things have already happened (see: the rise of Trump), and surely will continue to happen (see: the inevitable election of Trump :/). And after all, it takes a song with an exclamation point in the title to topple a song with an exclamation point in the title, right? Right!

Adele Visibly Upset At Fan Recording Her Live Performance During Italy Concert

Adele became upset at a fan recording her performance during the Italy leg of her "Adele Live 2016" concert series.

A video footage has revealed the British singer's sassy side as she called out a fan for filming her during a concert held at Italy's Verona on Sunday, May 29, Us Weekly magazine reported. In a clip included in the report, Adele appears to be addressing the concert crowd when she pointed out to a female fan among the concertgoers. "Yeah, I want to tell that lady as well, can you stop filming me with a video camera because I'm really here in real life," Adele stated.

The British singer also passionately pointed to herself as she explained that the fan should enjoy the show in "real life" instead of viewing it "through [the] camera." Adele also gestured to the said lady fan to dismantle the tripod that she had set-up to record the "Hello" crooner's concert. "Can you take your tripod down? This isn't a DVD, this is a real show," Adele requested the fan.

Adele also explained to the said lady fan that she wanted her to enjoy the concert.  She also commented how many other people were unable to have the same privilege. "I'd really like you to enjoy my show because there's lots of people outside that couldn't come in," the singer said.

The multi-awarded musician and songwriter also appeared visibly upset after she called out the said fan. The said video clip has shown Adele walking back to the center of the stage with an irritated expression on her face. Meanwhile, the singer's pronouncement during the Italy concert was met with cheers and claps from some of the concertgoers.

Adele is currently on the European leg of her "Adele Live 2016" concert series to promote her latest "25" album. The singer is expected to perform in Amsterdam, Paris and Antwerp in June before starting the North American leg of the concert series. The "Adele Live 2016" concert kicked off with a late February show in Northern Ireland and will end with a Mexico performance in November.

In other news, Adele has bought a home in Beverly Hills, according to TMZ. The top secret real estate sale was completed in April and is located in an exclusive gated community in L.A. County. The singer reportedly bought the 4-bedroom and 6-bathroom home for $9.5 million.

However, Adele has yet to move in due to her ongoing concert tour. Some of her celebrity neighbors in the said location includes Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Nicole Richie, Jennifer Lawrence, Cameron Diaz and other Hollywood stars.

Gucci Mane Drops New Song ‘First Day Out Tha Feds’ Just One Day After Prison Release — Hits 1 Million Streams In Just One Day

Hip-hop fans will have to find something new to chant now that "Free Gucci" doesn't mean much. Gucci Mane was released from prison on Thursday and immediately proved that none of his fans forgot about him. The rapper released a new track titled "First Day Out Tha Feds" just one day after he was released. The song racked up 1 million streams in its first day.

The Atlanta rapper, whose real name is Radric Davis, spent 2 years in a federal prison located in Terra Haute, Indiana, after a weapons conviction earned him a 39-month sentence. According to Forbes, there were rumors that Gucci Mane had an entire mixtape to release on Friday, but so far, that has turned out to be untrue.

While he was incarcerated, it may have been the work of Gucci Mane's team that helped to keep his fans interested. During the time that Mane was incarcerated, new Gucci songs were released both for sale and on streaming platforms with additions to his Trap God and Trap House series'. Thankfully, the trap genre didn't die while he was away, leaving the music scene wide open and waiting for Gucci Mane's return.

In addition to a brand new song, fans have been talking about Gucci Mane's brand new physique. The Atlanta rapper wasn't one of the most ripped prior to his trip to the slammer nearly three years ago. According to TMZ, Gucci Mane lost 50 pounds while locked up and he came out flaunting six-pack abs.

Gucci Mane credits a carb-free diet for his newly streamlined body and says that he will continue to eat a low-carb diet now that he is out on house arrest. The rapper also wasn't able to drink alcohol while incarcerated and that likely played a role in his weight loss as well.

Gucci reported to prison in September 2013 and he was originally sentenced to 39-months after he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The rapper was released four months early on Thursday after he was given credit for time served. According to the Bureau of Prisons response to a Pitchfork request, Gucci Mane's release date is still listed as September 20, and he will likely remain on house arrest until that time.

He didn't stop making music while he was in prison, and fans don't expect Gucci Mane to stop now either. It was reported by his record label that Gucci was back in the studio within an hour of his release.

When Gucci Mane's new song, "First Day Out Tha Feds," hit more than a million listens in under 24 hours, the newly freed rapper jumped on Instagram to thank his fans for the warm welcome home. He also posted a video message of his newest track to the social media site so that his fans could hear it there, too.

Based on Gucci Mane's first release since his own release from prison, many fans of his trap style are excited for the rapper to make a comeback. Of course, many aren't even calling it a comeback since Gucci was so prolific while he was still locked up. His label, 1017 Records, is still doing well and didn't seem to suffer while Gucci was away due to the success of some of its other artists, including Future and Young Thug. His Atlantic Records deal was canceled. Many expect upcoming Gucci Mane releases to come via his own record label, which doesn't seem to hurt his popularity in the least.

With Gucci Mane's early release, and then the immediate release of a brand new song, do you think his career will make a full comeback? Listen to the SoundCloud link for Gucci Mane's newest song and tell us what you think of "First Day Out Tha Feds" in the comments section below.

Feeling flirty! Kylie Jenner looked absolutely stunning on Sunday, May 29, when she shared a string of sexy photographs of herself, showcasing her cleavage in black lace bra.

"New to me and this is new to you," she captioned the first photograph, which showed her pouting provocatively at the camera, her face fully made up and her cleavage and bra poking out of her black top.

Jenner's confidently sexy postings may be the result of her new romance, which as Us Weekly reported previously, started up shortly after her split from Tyga earlier this month.

Jenner and Canadian rapper PartyNextDoor recently went public with their courtship, during a date night at a bowling alley, although, according to our insider, the duo's flirtations actually began two months ago.

"They were friends," a Jenner insider told Us of the couple who hung out together May 13, then took in Russell Simmons' All Def Comedy Live show in Hollywood May 18, "but now they're definitely together."

PND went public with his feelings on Saturday, May 28, when the "Come and See Me" singer crooned about his new love as he sat at a piano in a Snapchat video Jenner posted.

And the attraction appears to be mutual — the Jenner was photographed with her arm around her new beau when the pair went on a bowling date on Wednesday, May 25.

Eurovision Song Contest: Ukraine's Poroshenko hails win

"It was not the Ukrainian singer Jamala and her song "1944" that won the Eurovision 2016, it was politics that beat art", Frants Klintsevich, deputy chairman of the Russia's Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, told local reporters.

The 32-year-old's song, 1944, on the deportation of Crimean Tatars under Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, won the Eurovision contest at a time when Crimean Tatars claim to be facing similar repression from Russian Federation.

After collecting the trophy, she told the crowd: "I know that you sing a song about peace and love, but actually, I really want peace and love to everyone".

But the addition of the public vote moved Ukraine to the #1 spot with an overall score of 534 points, with Australia coming second, and Russian Federation coming third.

Jamala is a member of the Muslim Tatar minority of Crimea who saw her great-grandmother deported along with 240,000 others by Stalin in the penultimate year of World War II.

The win by a Ukrainian performer also means next year's contest, the 62nd annual event, will take place in Ukraine.

Jubilant Ukrainian officials erupted in celebration Sunday after Jamala won the Eurovision Song Contest with a powerful tribute to her Tatar people's deportation from Russian-annexed Crimea in 1944, while Russian officials complained of bias.

The focus on Crimea, which was annexed by Russian Federation in 2014, could be considered a swipe at Moscow, but Jamala insisted there was no political subtext, and contest officials agreed.

The country had the same rights as any other competing country, with votes from a professional jury and the voting public contributing to the final scoreboard.

Crimea was seized by Russian Federation troops in February 2014 as protests in Kyiv ousted the pro-Moscow president Viktor Yanukovych.

Jamala, herself a Tatar, stood on the Stockholm stage singing "you think you are gods" against a blood-red backdrop.

Broadcasted in the US for the first time, this year's competition was watched by an estimated 180 million viewers, according to Eurovision's official website.

Several Russian politicians said a pop music contest which is supposed to be free of politics had been skewed by political considerations and anti-Russian stereotypes.

Ukraine were crowned the champions of the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night (14May16), with Australia finishing a close second.

Like it or not, anything linked to Crimea in Ukraine today has, at the very least, political overtones because Russia's annexation of the peninsula remains an emotive topic and point of grievance for many Ukrainians.

Justin Timberlake provided half-time entertainment during the competition, opening his special guest performance with his hit Dance With Me before moving on to his new single Can't Stop The Feeling.

Russian online newspaper Lenta.ru branded the Ukrainian-Russian struggle for the victory in the context as musical and political one.

The show was also live-streamed on YouTube, giving Google a piece of a pie once reserved for European public broadcasters.

Army Rangers Deployed in Afghanistan Release the 5-Minute Video You Should Watch This Memorial Day

While deployed in Afghanistan, Army Rangers Andrew Yacovone and Justin Wright released their latest Memorial Day tribute music video to honor America's fallen heroes. Yacovone and Wright make up the musical duo known as Interstate 10.

The duo recorded part of the video for the song "I'm Gonna Miss You" overseas.

Words can't fully describe the message behind the song, so we suggest you watch the tribute video in its entirety in observance of Memorial Day.

Two Army Rangers release Memorial Day song from their deployment in Afghanistan

AFGHANISTAN – First Lt. Andrew Yacovone and First Lt. Justin Wright met on their first day of infantry basic training for officers in 2014.

What drew them together? They both loved music.

"I called out to the crowd and asked if anyone played guitar," Andrew tells ABC News. "Lo and behold, Justin was standing right next to me and he was like, 'Heck yeah, I play guitar!'"

That meeting led to an all-night music session and the release of their first song "Hometown Hero," on YouTube. And yes, they were still in Afghanistan.

Listen to "Hometown Hero" in the video box, below.

For Memorial Day 2016, Interstate 10, as the duo now calls themselves, has a new song and video out, "I'm Gonna Miss You," which is dedicated to military families of fallen servicemen.

Listen to "I'm Gonna Miss You" in the video box, above.

Andrew began writing the song before he met Justin. And now their second deployment has them 40 miles apart. But they've used Skype to get it finished.

They have a message for everyone this Memorial Day: "Memorial Day is about remembering the ones we lost and supporting their loved ones. It's about celebrating the lives they lived. Thanking them for allowing us the opportunity to come home safe, and most of all, thanking them for a second chance to hug our loved ones."

Their deployments are scheduled to end soon, so the pair will be reuniting at Bagram Airfield in the next few weeks.

Justin Bieber and Skrillex sued over 'Sorry'

Justin Bieber and DJ/producer Skrillex have been accused of copyright infringement over the pop superstar's hit single "Sorry."

Singer Casey Dienel, known professionally as White Hinterland, claims the "Baby" hitmaker's chart smash sounds eerily similar to her track "Ring The Bell," which became an indie hit in 2014.

In legal papers filed against the 22-year-old, his song co-writers, and producer Skrillex, Dienel alleges they lifted an eight-second snippet of her vocals, and then looped it to feature throughout Sorry, according to TMZ.

She also claims the tune features synthesizers, samples, synth bass, drums, and percussion, which all closely resemble the sounds featured on Ring The Bell.

Dienel contacted Bieber's representatives in December (15) and threatened legal action if the star didn't remove the sample, but her demands were reportedly ignored and now she is seeking compensation.

Bieber's publicists have yet to respond to the accusations.

The singer is currently enjoying a break from his Purpose World Tour dates, and it appears he may be be embarking on a new romance - he was photographed out and about in Beverly Hills, California on Wednesday with actress Nicola Peltz. The couple dined at Mastro's Steakhouse.

"The Transformers: Age of Extinction" star, 21, is close to model Gigi Hadid, who is best friends with Justin's longtime pals Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin. Bieber was linked to Baldwin romantically earlier this year.

He'll resume his Purpose tour on June 11, 2016 in Winnipeg, Canada.

For Oblivius, the Strokes' first song in three years, the band sticks to their classic formula: fuzzy electric guitars and Julian Casablancas' phone booth-distorted vocals over a crashing chorus.

Casablancas shared the band's new single on his new Sirius XMU radio show on Thursday, announcing that a new Strokes EP, Future Present Past, will follow on June 3.

Listen and download via Cult Records here.

Along with the new song, the band also shared more info about their new EP — it's a three-song release, the two other tracks titled Drag Queen and Threat of Joy — and announced a warm-up show at the Capitol Theater in NYC on May 31 ahead of their headlining stint at the Governors Ball music festival on June 3.

The band also posted a new video interview to YouTube, which you can check out below.

Justin Bieber Enjoys Road Trip With Superstar Dj Martin Garrix

Justin Bieber enjoyed an impromptu road trip with Dutch DJ Martin Garrix and music video director Rory Kramer on Tuesday night (24May16).

The Sorry singer had been recording with 20-year-old wunderkind Martin - born Martijn Garritsen - while 31-year-old video director pal Rory tagged along as he needed cheering up.

Rory, who directed his I'll Show You video, thanked Justin on Instagram for coming to his aid after he woke up feeling down.

"I woke up today having a rough day, felt alone, felt like I had little self worth, " he posted online. "I'm human, I have bad days too and thank you to those that reached out and offered support. Thanks @justinbieber for always knowing when I'm down and dropping what you're doing to make sure I'm still me. #RunIt."

Justin, who has recently admitted to struggling with fame, also shared a picture of the trio chilling out by a beach campfire.

"These are the nights I live for," wrote the 22-year-old pop star, who boasts 228.2million followers. "Had one of the best nights of my life last night. Road trip!"

However, it isn't all basic living for Justin and his pals, as the What Do You Mean singer is reportedly renting a lakeside home in exclusive Toluca Lake, Los Angeles complete with its own jet skis, boat, and dock.

Justin is reportedly paying $80,000 (£55,000) a month for the 10 bedroom home which also has a reported 16 bathrooms. It also boasts a gym, game room, screening room and a pool.

On Monday (23May16), Justin revealed he isn't that keen on awards shows calling them "hollow".

"I don't feel good when I'm there nor after," he explained in a lengthy post on Instagram after he attended the 2016 Billboard Awards."These award shows seem so hollow. I get the premise is to award people for their accomplishments, but is it really? Because when I look in the audience I see a bunch of fake smiles so that when the camera hits them they look happy."

Pink Opens Up About Motherhood and Her New Song

‘Alt-right’ white supremacists have chosen Taylor Swift as their ‘Aryan goddess’ icon, through no fault of her own

Taylor Swift is not a white supremacist. She doesn't identify as a neo-Nazi, and there is no evidence to suggest that, behind closed doors, she might.

That hasn't stopped some white supremacists from the "alt-right," a fringe group of the movement that often uses humor and message boards like 4chan to spread its ideology, from reportedly choosing her — ironically or not remains unclear — as an icon for their movement. In much the same way Cher or Barbra Streisand can be seen as "gay icons," a series of Internet memes, articles and message board posts have dubbed Swift an "Aryan goddess."

It appears to have begun in 2013 when a teenager named Emily Pattinson began overlaying quotes by Adolf Hitler on Pinterest photos of Taylor Swift as a joke, Buzzfeed reported. Swift's lawyer J. Douglas Baldridge, sent Pinterest a stern letter, asking for the images to be removed. It said, in part:

The association of Ms. Swift with Adolf Hitler undisputedly is 'harmful,' 'abusive,' 'ethnically offensive,' 'humiliating to other people,' 'libelous,' and no doubt 'otherwise objectionable.' It is of no import that Ms. Swift may be a public figure or that Pinterest conveniently now argues that the Offending Material is mere satire or parody. Public figures have rights. And, there are certain historical figures, such as Adolf Hitler, Charles Manson and the like, who are universally identified in the case law and popular culture as lightning rods for emotional and negative reaction.

Pinterest refused to take it down, citing parody laws. But those same images now appear on The Daily Stormer, which bills itself as "the world's most visited alt-right website."

The site was founded by self-proclaimed white supremacist Andrew Anglin after he realized Internet users were more interested in quick-hit, meme-type content than the long essays on white supremacy he would post on his previous site, "Total Fascism."

"My ideology is very simple," Anglin told the Los Angeles Times. "I believe white people deserve their own country."

The Southern Poverty Law Center dubbed it a "neo-Nazi website" and one of the two most popular "hate sites" online. Dylann Roof, the alleged shooter in the Charleston church massacre, was active on the site, and the idea of "white student unions," which popped up around the country last November, percolated there.

The idea of Swift as an alt-right pop icon seems to have percolated there as well.

Along with the memes, the Daily Stormer has become home to several pages of articles praising Swift that bear titles like "Taylor Swift, Avatar of European Imperialism," "Aryan Goddess Taylor Swift: Nazi Avatar of the White European People" and "Aryan Goddess Taylor Swift Accused of Racism for Behaving Like an Ape in a Music Video."

"Taylor Swift is a pure Aryan goddess, like something out of classical Greek poetry," Anglin told Vice's Broadly. "Athena reborn. That's the most important thing."

Columnist Milo Yiannopoulos explained in Breitbart the alt-right thinks "Swift is covertly 'red-pilled,' concealing her secret conservative values from the progressive music industry while issuing subtle nods to a reactionary fanbase."

Yiannopoulos wrote that Swift presents a perfect storm: she's white, blonde and doesn't speak about her politics. Meanwhile, she's drawn criticism regarding race in recent years.

In Pacific Standard, writer Aaron Bady accused Swift of being "nostalgic for a time when you could be nostalgic for white supremacy" after her Africa-set video for "Wildest Dreams" came out, which also prompted the NPR headline "Taylor Swift Is Dreaming Of A Very White Africa." Writer Camille Paglia inexplicably referred to her both as a "Nazi Barbie" and a "fascist" in a December column for The Hollywood Reporter. And, in 2009, a photo circulated the Internet showing her dancing with a man in a white t-shirt bearing a sloppy red swastika.

These are isolated incidents, but white supremacist websites have taken them out of context. For example, in the photograph, Swift wears a shirt with the letters "JH," which someone on the neo-Nazi forum Stormfront claimed means "Jew Hater."

If it all seems a little absurd, that might be the point.

The line between purported comedy and drop-dead seriousness is blurred throughout the Swift memes. Take this Facebook page, which includes many of those aforementioned memes. Liked by more than 19,000 people — and once removed by Facebook — it's titled "Taylor Swift for Fascist Europe" and is tagged "comedian" but includes comments such as "Not all races are equal" and "Let's show Muslims what a holy war really looks like."

Its anonymous curator told Vice that Swift's perceived innocence — the singer doesn't curse and rarely finds herself in the crosshairs of sexual controversy — is partly what makes her an icon in the fascist world.

"Take Kim Kardashian or Miley Cyrus as examples of this: both began their lives with the same Nordic blood that Swift did, but what makes these two degenerates unfit for consideration as fascist icons?" the curator said. "It is because, although Aryan in blood, the two are not Aryan in spirit. To be Aryan in spirit is what completes the fascist."

    Anglin agreed.

"It's incredible really that she's surrounded by these filthy, perverted Jews, and yet she remains capable of exuding 1950s purity, femininity and innocence," Anglin said. "She is the anti-Miley."

The blurred line between "comedy" and "hate speech" also helps make Daily Stormer so popular.

"I wanted something punchy and funny and enjoyable to read, and something that anybody can get something out of," Anglin told the Los Angeles Times. "A lot of people on the Internet prefer to write long essays, which a lot of people don't read, which have a limited audience."

The memes can act as Trojan horses for ideology.

"Daily Stormer is a perfect example for me of the influence 4chan has had on the rest of the messaging machine for white supremacy," Southern Poverty Law Center's Keegan Hankes told The Daily Beast. And as Caitlin Dewey wrote in The Washington Post, the 4chan style of messaging often involves memes.

In the Daily Beast, Jacob Siegel wrote that Keegan "sees the style of racism originally perfected on 4Chan's message boards—where the racism is only as effective as the meme that spreads it—as a template for Anglin's site."

If that's the case, then Swift memes can be seen as serious or as jokes, and it doesn't matter.

"A lot of the same images, a lot of the same rhetorical styles are being emulated on Daily Stormer and it's pretty successful," Keegan said. "The website has taken off."

Swift has not responded again to these claims. In addition to heaping praise on Swift, the site also cheers on Donald Trump, The Post reported.

Desiigner’s “Panda” Collects The Highest One Week Streaming Numbers For A Rap Song

(AllHipHop News) Desiigner's "Panda" may have been unseated from the top of the Hot 100, but the G.O.O.D. Music representative's smash hit still reigns on the Streaming Songs chart for a fifth week.

"Panda" collected 40.1 million domestic streams in one week. That total gives Desiigner the record for the highest numbers of streams for a song by a rapper over a seven-day period.

In addition, the Brooklyn rhymer joins a very short list of acts to reach over 40 million song streams during a single week. Baauer's "Harlem Shake" amassed 103 million streams in 2013, followed by Adele's "Hello" with 61.6 million in 2015 and Rihanna's "Work" with 46.5 million in 2016.

Earlier this year, Desiigner earned the distinction of being the youngest male artist to reach #1 on the Hot 100 since Chris Brown in 2007. "Panda" is currently at #3 on the Hot 100 and the Digital Songs charts. The record also holds the #1 spot on the Hot Rap Songs and Rap Streaming Songs chart.

Luis Clara Gomes's current album as Moullinex, Elsewhere, seamlessly blends upbeat disco and house with tropical psych pop, indie rock jangle, flute-assisted South American folk music, and more. We've said it before, but it's one of our favourite albums from 2015. Yet the Lisbon musician's world is still a mystery to us. Exactly how does a computer nerd, space expert, DJ, producer, remixer (for the likes of Robyn and Sebastien Tellier), Discotexas label boss, and band leader bring it all together?

Portuguese filmmaker Tiago Ribeiro helps shed some light on this with a new documentary about his compatriot, Elsewhere: A Dream Journal. Cut with footage from Moullinex's 2015 world tour, it delves deep into the Red Bull 20 Before 16 star's world and explores how Gomes's competing loves work in tandem. It's a fascinating look at how important collaboration is for modern-day artists and how they need to juggle more than just songwriting and touring.

Who will win the song of summer title?

Justin Timberlake is back with summertime single 'Can't Stop the Feeling.'(Photo: Jonathan Nackstrand, AFP/Getty Images)

For what seems like the first time in years, the song-of-summer crown is completely up for grabs.

Typically by mid-May, we're able to spot the ubiquitous pop anthem that will come to define the warm-weather months. Last year, it was Felix Jaehn's remix of OMI's Cheerleader, which Billboard dubbed an early favorite due to its surging sales and radio airplay. In years prior, Iggy Azalea's Fancy and Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe already had a clear lead on the competition: charting in the top five of Billboard's Hot 100 chart at this point, on their way to seven- and nine-week reigns at No. 1, respectively.

But this year, a trio of songs are neck-in-neck for the title: Desiigner's viral hit Panda, Drake's stream-heavy One Dance, and Justin Timberlake's sales-driven Can't Stop the Feeling (his first to debut at No. 1). All three have topped the Hot 100 for at least one week this past month, and with just-released singles from Ariana Grande (Into You) and Adele (Send My Love) entering the fray, the race is wide open. Experts say the increasingly fragmented media landscape could be changing the scope of the song of summer phenomenon.

"It's definitely a different animal," says Jason Lipshutz, Fuse Media's deputy editor of digital, who notes the growing divide between artists people talk about online (Beyoncé, Chance the Rapper) and listen to on radio (Lukas Graham, Mike Posner).

With such a crowded landscape, "I don't think there's as much of a fuss about what the official song of summer is anymore," he adds. "People kind of remember OMI's Cheerleader as last year's summer song, but also (Wiz Khalifa's) See You Again was there, Fifth Harmony's Worth It — there was a lot of stuff. It's more prevalent when there's something that's absolutely inescapable, but I feel like that hasn't happened" since Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines or Katy Perry's California Gurls. "I'm not sure there's anything this year that's going to be absolutely dominant like that, but if there is, my money's on One Dance."

John Ivey, program director at Los Angeles' KIIS FM, has Timberlake's Feeling as his song-of-summer pick. "It reminds me of Pharrell's Happy before you got tired of Happy," Ivey says. "It's super easy to remember and just a perfect pop record."

If Drake or Timberlake has the song of summer, it would break the recent streak of newcomers to take the badge — most of whom have either fallen off due to backlash (Azalea, Thicke) or failed to chart with follow-up singles (OMI, Jepsen). While some have chalked it up to a song-of-summer "curse," Lipshutz says the hit-and-miss careers of former champs are merely part of pop music's unpredictable nature.

"We've seen artists score that huge hit in the summer, and frantically try to forge a career out of that one song," Lipshutz says. "You have success stories like Meghan Trainor, who had her debut single (All About That Bass) go No. 1, and follow it up with a bunch of other hits. Then you have an artist like Magic!, who had the song of summer 2014 (Rude), but are not on anyone's radar right now."

Whether or not a song of summer can spell career longevity, the trend around it, at least, is here to stay.

"People like talking about things that are shared experiences, and there are increasingly fewer of those with culture being so fragmented," Lipshutz says. "Even if you're not a pop music fan, you know what song is inescapable just by being around a radio and watching TV. It's something everybody can have an opinion on."

This year's Billboard Music Awards promised to be heavy on emotion during its biggest performances by iconic artists such as Celine Dion and Madonna. And they certainly delivered on Sunday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with a political statement about transgender rights, a tender Prince tribute and Dion's return after personal losses. These are the most memorable moments of the night.

    CELINE'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN

Celine Dion's first television appearance since her husband, René Angélil, and her brother, Daniel Dion, died in January was among the most anticipated moments of the night.

The international star turned her tragedy into a triumphant display of strength and resiliency as she performed Queen's "The Show Must Go On." Backed by an orchestra and talented violinist Lindsey Stirling, Dion raised her hands to the sky and even did a little hip shake to make for the uplifting moment of the night.

After accepting the Billboard Icon Award, Dion was surprised by her son and apologized for crying, which no one would fault her for. She thanked her legions of fans for being with her through good times and bad and dedicated the award to her late husband, who she said will "continue to watch over me from up above."

    MADONNA, WONDER HONOR PRINCE

Billboard took some criticism when Madonna was chosen to pay tribute to the late great Prince, but together with Stevie Wonder, her heartfelt performance to the musical icon who died April 21 at age 57 was touching.

After being introduced by Roots drummer Questlove who skillfully articulated the impact of the musical genius, the tribute started with a recording of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy," as all the lights in the venue turned purple.

Madonna appeared seated on a purple velvet throne in a lacy glittery suit with a cane and sang a tender version of "Nothing Compares 2 U," as images of Prince played on a screen behind her.

Stevie Wonder joined her on a rousing "Purple Rain" duet. It became a crowd singalong with artists like Rihanna singing and dancing as the arena lit up with thousands of purple wristbands.

But BET responded on Twitter with a video promoting their own upcoming Prince tribute at the BET Awards next Sunday. The response said, "Yeah, we saw that. Don't worry. We Got You."

    KESHA SLAYS

For all the questions over Kesha's appearance, she delivered a standout performance of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me, Babe" with pianist Ben Folds that was beautiful in its simplicity.

She didn't need to address an ongoing legal dispute with producer Dr. Luke, whose record label pulled the plug on the performance then reversed itself amid fears she would reference her allegations of sexual abuse against him.

She reminded everyone that she was still a very talented vocalist and paid a tribute the legendary songwriter, who turns 75 this year.

    DEMI'S TRANSGENDER STATEMENT

Earlier this year, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas joined a growing list of musicians boycotting North Carolina over a law that blocks local anti-discrimination protections and determines which bathrooms transgender people can use.

During her performance of "Cool For the Summer," Lovato wore a shirt featuring an inclusive bathroom symbol in one of the only overtly political statements of the awards show.

LGBT rights organization GLAAD said in a release following the performance that copies of the shirt will be sold on Lovato and Jonas' national tour with proceeds going to LGBT organizations in North Carolina.

    BRITNEY'S BIGGEST HITS

Britney Spears' opening medley of her nearly two decades of hits started off stiff, but by the end of the performance, she finally warmed up.

The singer, who received the Billboard Millennium Award, came out of the smoke joined by more than a dozen dancers and quickly disrobed into a red bikini.

But her robotic dancing and lip-syncing made the performance feel like an unemotional overview of her Las Vegas show.

However, after straddling a giant guitar for a cover of "I Love Rock n' Roll" she finally loosened up. She danced and gyrated across multiple stages to the soundtrack of her greatest hits, such as "Slave for U," and "Toxic."

Minnesota Vikings fight song gets ‘Hey Teddy’ treatment

Minnesota Vikings: What if the O-line doesn't improve? by Dan Zinski

People post cover songs on YouTube and invite celebrities to event all the time, but very few do it with the kind of flair that 6 year old Obadiah Gamble shows in a new video titled "Hey Teddy".

Gamble is a huge fan of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. In nearly every photo and video of the young man, he's wearing purple and more often than not it also has the team's quarterback front and center. Because of this, he decided to invite Bridgewater to his birthday party.

But a straight-forward invitation just wouldn't cut it. Instead, the young man recorded his take on the Minnesota Vikings fight song "Skol Vikings" and added a catchy chorus to the song to make it even more of an earworm.

Here is the video from the YouTube account of Vanessa Gamble, which is also shared on Obadiah's Twitter account:

Between the charm of the cutout microphone and props and the catchy song itself, this song has the potential to be a regular selection during Minnesota Vikings tailgating. Not only that, but hopefully it gets the attention of Bridgewater himself to hear the invite to Gamble's party.

In case you were wondering Obadiah isn't limited to just his vocal skills. On his Twitter account, he was shown doing some drumming with some pails just like street performers do sometimes. Here is that video.

Hopefully, this video will catch the eye of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, but for not it has at least captured the hearts and invaded the ears of fans around the internet. Once you hear "Hey Teddy" for the first time, odds are you'll have trouble getting it out of your head for the rest of the day.

Huge thanks go out to Vanessa Gamble for sharing this great video and congratulations go out to Obadiah Gamble on creating such a catchy song to get the attention of his favorite Minnesota Vikings player.

14-yr-old pens song for Aarushi, to upload it online on her b'day

Lucknow: She would have turned 22 after two days. Life, however, dealt a blow. Everything changed forever with her death. Even more tragic, her parents were accused, and convicted, of her murder. But the daughter, who is no more, seeks justice. As the infamous Noida double murder case remains pending before the Allahabad high court and Rajesh and Nupur Talwar serve time in the Dasna jail, another 14-year-old, a class 9 student of La Martiniere College, Chahat Malhotra, has penned an appeal on Aarushi's behalf in the hope that her parents finally get the time to cry their hearts out. Chahat's song is a prayer pleading with the legal system, with destiny, with God, to spare her parents the extreme agony, to absolve them, so that her soul rests in peace. She has sung it too and the video of the song, prepared by a social media based group 'Justice Now', has been uploaded on YouTube. The video will be made public on May 24, Aarushi's birth anniversary. "I had heard about the case and was touched. I felt that parents can never kill their own child. Then, I watched the movie Talvar, felt even more uncomfortable and tried to study the case. It was then that I thought of putting in my efforts," Chahat says, adding that she believes Aarushi's parents should get justice. "It's been eight years now and they are in jail. We know they are innocent. The case has been going in a different direction," said Chahat. The music enthusiast, who aspires to join the civil services, approached a studio in Lucknow to record the song, a prayer, and now hopes to revive the debate about the botched up investigations in the double-murder case. "We also plan to approach law colleges in the country to spread awareness about the case. On Tuesday, our group members will hold candle-light marches and pay floral tributes in various parts of the country including Delhi. Bengaluru and Guwahati," said group promoter Swati Bajpai, adding that supporters of the cause have planned an event in the US and UK as well. "We hope that justice prevails and that the case hearing is expedited," hopes Swati. The case had hogged limelight since May 16, 2008, when Aarushi was found dead on her bed. The very next day, the Talwars' domestic help Hemraj was found murdered on the terrace of Talwars' Jalvayu Vihar flat in Noida. "The investigations into the case were apparently not quite professional. From the press conference of the then Inspector General of Police (Meerut Range) Gurdarshan Singh introducing the honour killing concept, to the CBI, called in by the then UP chief minister Mayawati, finding that Talwars' compounder Krishna and two domestic helps Rajkumar and Vijay Mandal had a role to play in the murder, to then suddenly holding the Talwars guilty of the murder despite no clear evidence, the case got twisted into different dimensions," said Swati.

David Hasselhoff reportedly has less than $4G to his name

David Hasselhoff and his ex-wife Pamela Bach are reportedly engaged in a spousal support war.

The former "Baywatch" star is claiming he has less than $4,000 to his name, TMZ reports.

According to the gossip site, Hasselhoff alleges he makes $112,000 per month but spends $66,000 of that. TMZ reports Hasselhoff says he can't afford to pay Bach.

The Hoff's European tour was cut short because tickets were not selling and there's no telling how much he'll bring in with his new reality show "Hoff the Record."

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Hasselhoff has $1.79 million in real estate, retirement savings, cars and other items.

Bach, who currently gets $252,000 a year from her ex reportedly claims the actor is worth more than $120 million and is still working.

A court hearing is reportedly scheduled for the end of the month. The former couple have two children together.

Reps for Bach and Hasselhoff did not immediately return FOX411's request for comment.

A Song Of Stability From The Plains Of Estonia

The Estonians are serious about singing. The power of human voices practically propelled the small Baltic country to independence during the Soviet era. In the late 1980s, hundreds of thousands of Estonians routinely gathered to perform forbidden patriotic songs. The events energized the nation, leading to what was called the "Singing Revolution."

Songs We Love. Songs We Love

A key figure in Estonia's rich singing heritage is the 85-year-old composer Veljo Tormis, whose works range from folk songs and opera to politically potent choral pieces. His influence extends to a new generation of composers — like Tõnu Kõrvits, who is keen on upholding the vocal traditions.

In "Tasase maa laul," translated as "Plainland Song" (or "Song of a Level Land"), Kõrvits reworks a Tormis piece from 1964 into a haunting expression that would not sound out of place on the new Radiohead album.

The original song was scored for men's a cappella chorus. Kõrvits' version is lush and dreamy. Undulating strings caress Kadri Voorand's androgynous vocal and add evocative coloring to lines like "the clouds are low and grey as a mouse." Pulsations from a kannel (an Estonian zither), persist throughout, giving the song its nervous heartbeat.

The Estonian text, by poet and politician Paul-Eerik Rummo, speaks of "peace and stability" on the plains and understanding one's sense of home. Kõrvits, by reaching back to Tormis, seems to be confirming that the long line of Estonian singing traditions will continue unbroken.

Mirror is available now on ECM.

It's easy to forget that The Monkees' original run as a band lasted only from 1965 to 1971, a stretch that included a short-lived but much-loved sitcom and a string of bestselling albums. For later generations — especially the ones who came of age amid endlessly repurposed reruns on MTV and Nickelodeon in the late '80s — The Monkees' music has been reborn in reunion tours and on occasional albums, even as the group itself has dealt with internal strife and the 2012 death of Davy Jones.

But in honor of The Monkees' 50th anniversary, the group is releasing a new album called Good Times! with the aid of producer Adam Schlesinger. It features songs that were written for the band in the 1960s but never recorded, as well as original compositions by Monkees-loving modern songwriters, including Weezer's Rivers Cuomo (hear "She Makes Me Laugh" here), XTC's Andy Partridge (hear "You Bring The Summer" here), and a collaboration between Paul Weller and Oasis' Noel Gallagher.

And, though Mike Nesmith won't tour to support Good Times! — he left the band a few years back — he does appear on the album, The Monkees' first since 1996. In fact, he sings lead in this song, "Me & Magdalena," which was written for the band by Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard. Though more introspective and subdued than The Monkees' best-known songs, it's quite lovely, like... well, like The Monkees performing a Ben Gibbard song.

    Here's Gibbard, writing via email:

Before The Beatles, before The Velvet Underground and before punk and/or indie rock, The Monkees were the first band I truly loved. Their albums were always on in our home when I was a kid (especially Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.), and I learned to sing alongside them. I spent countless hours in front of the TV in the '80s watching Monkees reruns wishing I could climb through the screen and be in the show with them. They made being in a band seem so fun — and goddammit, it should be! For these reasons and a million others, I can say with absolutely zero hyperbole that contributing "Me & Magdalena" to this album has been the greatest honor of my career.

Good Times! comes out May 27 on Rhino.

Sebastian Bach returns to the Garden State for performance

Sebastian Bach: "As soon as we got on the parkway I could literally feel the vibe of Bon Jovi and Bruce [Springsteen] … and I thought, 'I want this.' "

Sebastian Bach is turning down the volume, at least offstage. "I went to my doctor last summer to check on my ears," the singer said by phone. "My doctor said my ears are fine, but if you don't start turning it down now, then in 10 years you'll wish that you had.

"I've always listened to music very loud," Bach said. "Now on my hourlong runs I don't crank my iPhone. There's actually an advantage to that. At a lower volume I'm hearing things in songs I've never heard before."

The former longtime New Jersey resident and original singer for Garden State hard rockers Skid Row performs on Friday in Sayreville. Bach's sensory wakeup call is especially timely given the news in April that AC/DC singer Brian Johnson was told by doctors that he could suffer complete hearing loss if he continued touring. Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose is taking Johnson's place on AC/DC's current and fall tours.

"When I read about Brian Johnson losing his hearing I couldn't think of a more nightmarish scenario," said Bach, 48. "I don't think I could live without playing or listening to music."

Bach's show on Friday will include a new feature, a short introductory set during which he will perform rearranged versions of several songs. "I've arranged the songs more in a way like the Broadway shows I've done," he said. "I've done this thing called a sound check for decades. You go to the venue and then sing songs for nobody. I thought, 'Why don't I sing four songs in front of people?' The fans have been loving it."

He said his main set will feature a high-energy dose of Skid Row classics like late 1980s and early 1990s hits such as "Youth Gone Wild," "18 and Life," "I Remember You" and "Slave to the Grind," as well as rarities like "Sweet Little Sister" and "Rattlesnake Shake." All showcase Bach's instantly recognizable, multi-octave vocals.

Questions about a Skid Row reunion have swirled for years. Bach left the band in 1996 on acrimonious terms, and Skid Row has carried on with different singers. He said he's open to the idea of joining forces once again. "I do think it would be cool," Bach said. "I have no animosity toward those guys."

Bach will be embarking on another tour later this year whose itinerary consists of bookstores rather than concert venues. His autobiography, "18 and Life on Skid Row," is scheduled for release on June 28.

Bach said he had to prove to his publishing company, Harper Collins, that he could write more than lyrics. "I locked myself in my bedroom for 2½ weeks and just wrote and they loved it," he said. "That was one of the greatest moments in my career."

The Peterborough, Ontario, native has much to take pride in. Skid Row has sold more than 20 million records worldwide, and their sophomore effort, "Slave to the Grind" (1991), hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. Bach's late father, an artist, painted the record's cover art. He has also released four well-received solo albums.

Bach has also starred on Broadway. He made his debut in 2000 playing the lead role in "Jekyll & Hyde" and appeared on the Great White Way in "The Rocky Horror Show." He played the title role in the national touring production of "Jesus Christ Superstar."

"Broadway looks for singers that can sing every night for months at a time, and I'm very lucky I can do that," Bach said. "The more I sing my voice just gets stronger."

Bach joined Sayreville-based Skid Row in 1987 when he was 19. The band's 1989 self-titled debut was an instant hit, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard chart and selling more than 5 million copies in America. The band released two additional original albums with Bach as well as a covers record.

Bach said he was excited to come to New Jersey from Detroit, where his previous band was based. "As soon as we got on the parkway I could literally feel the vibe of Bon Jovi and Bruce [Springsteen] and Little Steven [Van Zandt]. I could feel the Jersey vibe and I thought, 'I want this.' "

Blink-182's new song packs a lot of bewilderment into 14 seconds

We knew that blink-182 was due for a reinvention after founding member Tom DeLonge parted ways with the band, but on the new album, titled California, it seems the band is committed to distilling blink-182 to its purest form.

"I want to see some naked dudes, that's why I built this pool!" Mark Hoppus croons on "Built This Pool." And that's it, as confirmed by the only other words in the song, the spoken inquiry, "Is that really it?"

For your listening convenience, the band shared the single in a 10 hour loop on YouTube, perhaps a as a response to the 10 hour loop of DeLonge's verse in "I Miss You."

Thanks for never acting your age, dudes.

Anthony Mason was the Knick in Notorious B.I.G. song says Fat Joe

Fat Joe put an end to one of rap's great sports-related mysteries.

On the track "I Got a Story to Tell" from his 1997 posthumous album "Life After Death" the late Notorious B.I.G. rapped about getting with a girl who was dating a New York Knick.

According to Fat Joe, who was apearing on ESPN's "Highly Questionable" with Dan Le Batard Monday, the Knick in question was the late Anthony Mason, who died last February at age 48.

"I could tell you but I don't want to be disrespectful... But um... It was about Anthony Mason, Rest In Peace," Fat Joe said while talking to LeBatard and co-host Bomani Jones.

Queens street will be named after Knicks great Anthony Mason

Le Batard had been looking for an answer to this question for some time. He had John Starks on his show in 2014 and while Starks said he knew who the song referenced, he wouldn't give up his former teammate.

Since we aren't exactly comfortable printing the exact lyrics to the song, let's paraphrase: "I Got a Story to Tell" talks about how Biggie hooked up with some girl, they went back to her place and they were left in a compromising situation when her man, a Knicks player - allegedly Mason - arrived home.

The woman stalled by asking him to bring her a drink. In that time Biggie rapped that he realized he had his gun, tied up the woman, covered his face with a scarf and made it look like he was robbing the place so the two wouldn't get caught. The song concludes he left with a substantial amount of money.

But that's what the song said. Don't take that as total fact, warns Fat Joe.

"... And Ant Mason's my brother. I love Ant Mason. But you gotta also know, that rap is entertainment. We stretch the truth. We change things up," Joe said.

After realizing the mystery was solved, Le Batard and Jones were left stunned - and thankful.

"I feel like I'm WikiLeaks or something," Joe laughed.

Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas join James Corden for Carpool Karaoke

LOS ANGELES, May 17 (UPI) -- Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas discussed dating, friendship and street performances as The Late Late Show host James Corden's latest Carpool Karaoke guests.

The duo helped Corden drive to work in a clip for Monday night's episode, and were candid about the lack of romance in their 10-year friendship.

"I don't know if you've noticed but I kinda go for older guys, no offense," Lovato responded to her driver when asked whether she and Jonas have ever shared an erotic or romantic connection. Corden continued to focus on Jonas' love life, grilling him on his previous decision to wear a purity ring and obviously not anymore.

"When did you decide to ditch the ring?" Corden asked.

"I had a real relationship, with an adult, and I fell in love actually. I fell in love and then I decided it was time to take the purity ring off," Jonas said. "Are we gonna keep talking about my dating life?"

"I remember my first purity ring," Lovato joked.

The threesome rocked out to Lovato's "Heart Attack" and "Stone Cold," Jonas' "Jealous" and "Close," and his brother's band DNCE's "Cake By The Ocean," before taking the show outdoors. As a "test show" Jonas, Lovato and Corden performed a free street concert for passers by, singing "Confident."

Hear Maren Morris Dream of Being a Baller in Devilish New Song 'Rich'

With her debut single "My Church" currently in the Top 10, Maren Morris has every reason to drop a little attitude. Instead, she just fantasizes about it in "Rich," a song off her upcoming album Hero. The Texas singer-songwriter released the track online.

Sidebar See Maren Morris, Brothers Osbornes' Stapleton Cover »

Propelled by a bouncy reggae beat and some inspired "la dee dah" scatting, "Rich" finds Morris swearing off the guy who continues to break her heart while dreaming of living the yacht life like Diddy. "Every promise you made would have some real value," she sings in the pre-chorus. "All the little lies rolling off your lips is money falling from the sky / Shit, I'd be rich."

For Morris, weaving in a colorful metaphor or two — "shit" is a favorite of hers and pops up throughout Hero — helps ground her lyrics in the authentic.

"I just try to write how I would say it. I'm only shooting myself in the foot if I write it in a way where I wouldn't speak like that," Morris tells Rolling Stone Country. "I don't get this whole glossing over fun little tidbits of people's personalities. That's not how we talk. . . . But it's also just fun to throw in colorful language, whether it's a cuss word or not. I want people to listen to this and feel like it's their friend saying it to them."

Morris will release Hero on June 3rd and hit the road with Keith Urban on his headlining tour that same month. Morris says she's attracted to songwriters who refuse to pull punches.

"That's what I've always gravitated toward. If you listen to a John Prine song or a Johnny Cash song, everything is said poetically. But it's not trying to be poetic — it's actually very plainly stated. But you connect to it and it's beautiful," she says. "I appreciate the art of saying it like it is."

LONDON (AP) — It appears we know who Jennifer Lawrence won't be voting for this fall.

During a Friday appearance on the BBC's "Graham Norton Show," the 25-year-old Academy Award-winning actress said she was at a concert where she heard Donald Trump was in attendance.

She says she was "adamant" about finding Trump so she could make a video of herself shouting an expletive and making an obscene gesture at him. She says she thinks the likely Republican presidential nominee knew she was looking for him.

Trump came up in conversation after fellow guest Johnny Depp offered up a Trump impersonation . Depp played the New York billionaire in a recent online film for comedy website, Funny or Die.
