Hear Maren Morris Dream of Being a Baller in Devilish New Song 'Rich'

With her debut single "My Church" currently in the Top 10, Maren Morris has every reason to drop a little attitude. Instead, she just fantasizes about it in "Rich," a song off her upcoming album Hero. The Texas singer-songwriter released the track online.

Propelled by a bouncy reggae beat and some inspired "la dee dah" scatting, "Rich" finds Morris swearing off the guy who continues to break her heart while dreaming of living the yacht life like Diddy. "Every promise you made would have some real value," she sings in the pre-chorus. "All the little lies rolling off your lips is money falling from the sky / Shit, I'd be rich."

For Morris, weaving in a colorful metaphor or two — "shit" is a favorite of hers and pops up throughout Hero — helps ground her lyrics in the authentic.

"I just try to write how I would say it. I'm only shooting myself in the foot if I write it in a way where I wouldn't speak like that," Morris tells Rolling Stone Country. "I don't get this whole glossing over fun little tidbits of people's personalities. That's not how we talk. . . . But it's also just fun to throw in colorful language, whether it's a cuss word or not. I want people to listen to this and feel like it's their friend saying it to them."

Morris will release Hero on June 3rd and hit the road with Keith Urban on his headlining tour that same month. Morris says she's attracted to songwriters who refuse to pull punches.

"That's what I've always gravitated toward. If you listen to a John Prine song or a Johnny Cash song, everything is said poetically. But it's not trying to be poetic — it's actually very plainly stated. But you connect to it and it's beautiful," she says. "I appreciate the art of saying it like it is."
